Frequently Asked Questions About New York Notary Public Rules: - Can a Notary Public Prepare My Document?
No. A Notary may not prepare legal documents, or even act as a legal advisor in any way, unless he/she is also an attorney. Violating this rule may lead to prosecution. Notary Public cannot provide advice about your documents. - Can a Notary Public Notarize a Copy of a Birth Certificate?
No. Vital Records cannot be notarized. A certified copy must be obtained from Vital Records office that acts as the official custodian of Birth Certificates. - What Is the Fee for Notarizing a Document in New York State?
A notary public may charge a fee of $2.00 for administering an oath or affirmation or for taking an acknowledgment or proof of execution. Unless otherwise authorized by law, a notarial fee may not exceed this amount.
